Humane Animal Welfare Society (HAWS) is an open-admission, no-kill shelter dedicated to strengthening the relationship between animals and humans through adoptions and education – making a more compassionate community possible.
Their mission is to lead the community in animal welfare and assure a sanctuary for animals in need. To that end, HAWS envisions a community where all animals are treated with compassion, dignity and respect -- one where humane sentiments are spread throughout our community for the betterment of animals and people alike.
Why did HAWS join as a sponsor of downtown’s first dog park?
HAWS' adopters live in communities throughout southeastern Wisconsin and beyond. It is important that our adopters, and all dog owners, know of resources for their pets that are available close to their homes.
We're also honored to have been gifted this sponsorship by one of our partners, Berghammer Construction Corporation. A company that understands the importance of exercise and socialization for dogs, as well as awareness and strong community relationships.
What are you most looking forward to when downtown's dog park opens?
Two very basic things known to all dog owners: (1) A tired dog is a well-behaved dog, and (2) A well-socialized dog is welcome in many places. The downtown dog park will allow owners the chance to work with their dogs in a safe environment, while also allowing them to network with other pet owners to find more opportunities! Dogs and people are both social species who like being around others of their kind.
What do you enjoy most about Milwaukee?
The entire metro-Milwaukee area has a welcoming, community spirit -- and that extends to our canine best friends! This is an area full of "dog people" and we love being a part of it!
